Wolverine talks about the simplicity of some of our current 2NF and 3NF examples and what he suspects is the potentially daunting complexity faced by real organizations. This is actually the central challenge of information systems: taking complex problems and breaking them down into manageable chunks that actually work.
You will have ample opportunity to face this challenge in the class projects. Let me warn you, it is not trivial. With the added complexity the real world adds to the project, if you have not strongly developed the notions around normalization and E-R diagrams, you will mess up. The best way to develop these notions is by working the exercises and going over the class examples.
